What is irc? From wikipedia "Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet chat or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message, as well as chat and data transfers via Direct Client-to-Client." this is used for many games and clan communication's.
Irc basics
JOIN Use this command to join a channel/room.
For example, you want to join #clan_xyz, you would type:
/join #clan_xyz
INVITE
Use this command to invite someone to a channel you are in.
For example, you want to invite your clanmate [xyz]sharpshooter to your clan`s channel #clan_xyz, you would type:
/invite [xyz]sharpshooter #clan_xyz
WHOIS
Use this command to find out which channels someone is in.
For example, you want to know which channels [xyz]sharpshooter is in, you would type:
/whois [xyz]sharpshooter
TOPIC
The topic is what people first see when they join your channel. Use this command to set a topic for your channel.
For example, to change the topic in #clan_xyz to welcome people to your channel, type the following:
/topic #clan_xyz Welcome to the home of Clan XYZ
MODE
There are 2 common user modes that affect a user`s status in a channel. They are:
Mode Meaning Effect +o Ops Allows you to kick others out of the channel. +v Voice Allows you to talk in the channel if it is moderated (see below)
To assign one of these modes to a user, you must have ops in the channel. For example, you want to op [xyz]sharpshooter in #clan_xyz, you would type:
/mode #clan_xyz +o [xyz]sharpshooter
There are a number of channel modes you can set on your channel that affect it. The most common ones are listed below.
Mode Meaning Effect +t Topic Only ops are allowed to change the topic. +n No external messages external messages Nobody can send messages to the channel unless they`re in the channel. +i Invite-only You must get invited by someone in the channel to enter the channel. +m Moderated Only ops and voices can talk in the channel. +k Key The channel has a key you need to type in to join the channel. +l Limit The channel is limited to only allow a set number of people in the channel. +p Private The channel will not appear on a /whois listing of a channel member. +s Secret The channel will not be visible to someone outside the channel.
To assign one of these modes to a channel, you must have ops in the channel. For example, you want to make your clan`s private channel #xyz.priv invite-only so nobody but your clanmates can enter, you would type:
/mode #clan_xyz +i
Where to get help:
Most questions can be answered in #help which is the main network help channel.
Registering Channels on GDD:
First, pick a channel name that you want. Be sure it conforms to our Rules. This will be explained more further down.
Second, you need to join that channel and get ops in it. If there is a ChanServ already there, someone has thought of that channel before you and you need to repeat step one.
Third, Join #help and ask for an admin or helper to help you register your channel. Wait patiently as the admins and helpers might be busy.
Admins and helpers might ask you to add Clan or Team or Guild or something else distinguishable if we feel the channel name might be a little inappropriate.
Requesting a Vhost
Vhosts are Virtual Hosts. They hide your real host from other users as a security feature that we offer to organizations, clans and teams. To register a vhost, you must first be an admin in the channel for which you want the vhost. Secondly, you join #help and ask for an admin to help you register a vhost for your channel. Or you can do /hs request insert vhost here.
IRC Etiquette While on our network, we have Rules and we have etiquette. Another definition of etiquette is courtesy. There are a few things you should try to remember if you want to be treated with respect from the community and the net overall. Clan channel here can be an organization, group or business as well as a guild, team, clan or pickup channel. We have used Clan channel as a generalization for "your channel" or "someone else`s channel" but the rules apply for *all* channels on this network.
General Rules for the Network: (This applies to all channels.)
- Don`t type everything in capital letters. Doing so is considered yelling and usually ends up with the one using all caps being laughed at or made fun of.
- If you`re talking to someone you don`t know, do not use profanity or be antagonistic. Be respectful.
- Do not spam or flood any channel. If you feel it is necessary to continuously repeat yourself, then you`re probably in the wrong place.
- Report any incidents of excess cloning, ping flooding, DoS`ing, ICMP/Nuking, etc. to the network OPs. Most networks ask that you have a few things in order to do report a Nuke/ICMP/Packeting/DoS:
1. A log of the threat or of the incident 2. A trace from NukeNabber, ICMP watch, or similar program 3. A screenshot of the incident
- Remember your manners: "please", "thank you", and "I really appreciate it" are NOT outdated concepts on IRC!
- Try to work out trouble or avoid trouble with other users BEFORE it turns into a nuke-a-thon. Work together. The network belongs to EVERYONE, and we`re all expected to be able to get along. If someone repeatedly pisses you off, either don`t go in channels that they frequent, or you have a feature called /ignore. USE IT.
- Watch your language! There are often children under the age of consent hiding behind adult-sounding names. Do you REALLY want to be the one Junior`s parents come after for giving their 10-year-old his (new) extensive vocabulary of four-letter words? If you REALLY need to swear, take it to a query window or a DCC chat!
- Know the policies of the networks you`re on with regard to certain types of software, links, etc. If the network you`re on has a strict policy, please follow it. We can`t monitor what you talk about in your channels, but channel topics can be routinely and easily scanned by anyone on the network who knows how to do a /list. Protect yourself and your network admins by knowing the policies and reporting those who violate them. We appreciate your help in keeping that kind of trouble off the network and making it more enjoyable for everyone!
- Do NOT make unfounded accusations, nuke yourself and accuse someone else of doing it, or any of that other lameness. We WILL see through it, and we WILL NOT be happy with people who waste OPs time by reporting things that didn`t happen! That`s part of the reason many networks have started asking for a screenshot! This is also covered in the rules, Part 2 Section 10 - No Lying to Admins.
- Do not assume that the OP you`re working with is male. There are more and more lady OPs on the networks these days, if in doubt, check the ident. If STILL in doubt... ASK!
- Do NOT tell lies, repeat malicious (or blatantly untrue gossip, spread rumors, or involve the network OPs in your personal quarrels with other users. We`re a little too old for that, we`re assuming that most of you are, too.
- Do NOT Jump into a public channel spouting four-(or five-) letter words, concepts, or bathroom humor. It`s not shocking, it`s just plain IRRITATING to those of us who were trying to hold intelligent conversations before your arrival.
- Do NOT Post in your clan channel topic "FREE PORN AT www.myisp.com/myhomepage/" This will (on some networks) get your channel taken away. The same is true for WAREZ. It`s highly illegal to distribute adult-oriented links to anyone under 18; and even more so to distribute software without appropriate licensing and copyright. If you think we`re joking check the US Penal Code. If you`re found distributing warez, you face up to $25,000 in fines and the possibility of five years JAILTIME. Try explaining that when you go to apply for a job as a sysadmin.
- Laws applicable offline are almost always applicable online. Do not break a law. Do not harass or defame individuals. You can be sued or prosecuted from your online activity just as you can be sued or prosecuted from your offline activities.
- Do not decide to "get even" for someone flaming you by attacking them. This is not only against our rules, it`s illegal. No retaliation. If you feel you`re being harassed, find an admin in #help to report it.
Rules for the Main Support Channel (#help)
All the general rules apply here too.
- Ask for help, generally by stating the problem.
- Be patient, Admins and Helpers may be helping other users and will help you as quickly as we can.
- If the ops have to moderate the channel (+m), do not get upset and start messaging the ops saying you cannot talk in #help. We do not usually moderate the channel unless something is going on or we have an announcement.
- Don`t be disrespectful to users in the channel who try to give you help. Your problem might be as simple as a syntax error on a command to chanserv or your ident changed and sometimes the regulars in the channel can help identify the problem.
- Do not spam or flood the channel. If no admins or helpers are around at that moment, give us time. We`re gamers and people with families and jobs as well, so while we strive to be on as often as possible and available, there might be times of an hour or so that we`re not there. Don`t repeat your question or request unless you are specifically asked again to state what you need.
Beginners FAQ
This FAQ is designed to answer the basic just-starting-out questions you may have when you first connect to the GoldenDogDevelopment IRC network. In-depth answers may be found elsewhere on this website. Being new to IRC is fine -- we were all there at one time -- but reading this may assist you with becoming more comfortable using our network and help you make sense of the chaos you find yourself in.
Q. How do you connect to our network?
A. You`ll need an IRC client, which is a program you can download that`ll allow your computer to connect to one of our servers and let you chat with other users. There are many different IRC programs available for a variety of operating systems. The most common one for Windows users, mIRC, is available here. Download it and install it. Other possable one's are x-chat and chatzilla.
When you run the client for the first time, you`ll be asked to set some options for yourself. If you need additional help with setting it up, try this tutorial to help get you started. Please note, offensive/abusive nicknames aren`t tolerated on . Make it a nice nickname. You should also be able to select the server you wish to connect to. If you don`t see an EnterTheGame server listed, add it to the list. Use irc.goldendogdev.net as the server address.
Alternately, in the text entry window at the bottom of your mIRC program, you can type /server irc.goldendogdev.net to connect directly to . This will automatically connect you to one of our irc servers. Once connected, you can begin chatting once you find a channel you like.
If you have a firewall in place, you may notice an alert at this time from securityservices.goldendogdev.net. There is no harm being done to you. This is merely to check and see if you are on an insecure proxy on our network. This is a measure necessary to cut down on channel takeovers and various forms of harassment. If you didn`t understand any of what this paragraph just said, don`t worry. We`re harmless. We`re not infecting you with any trojans or trying to hack into your computer. That`s all you need to know.
If you are not able to connect to after being scanned by our security scanner, please see the answer to "I can`t connect to . How do I fix this?"
Q. How do I change/register my nickname on ?
A. When you connect to , the server will check to see if the nickname you`ve picked is in use. If so, it will use the alternate nickname you`ve selected. If that`s also taken, it will prompt you for a new one. To change your nickname, you would type /nick newonehere. You cannot put spaces in your nickname -- so no "Elvis Is King", but "Elvis_Is_King" *is* acceptable. You can also use the /nick command if you simply feel like changing your nickname.
Q. How do I find the channel I`m looking for?
A. Channelnames begin with a #. If you know the name of the channel you want to join, you would type /join #channelname. If you don`t know the specific name of the channel, or you`re looking to find a list of channels relating to a particular topic or game, you might want to try the /list command. If you /list searchwordhere then mIRC will get a list of channels which include your searchword in either the channelname itself or its topic. If you do a /list WITHOUT any additional words, then mIRC will get a list of all the non-secret/private channels on . This CAN take a while, so be warned.
Once you have your search results, then you can double-click on the channelname of the channel you want to join, or type /join #channelname.
Q. How do I set my friend as an operator/op of my channel? How about a voice/peon? Halfop?
A. Having operator status is less powerful than being a channel admin of a channel, but it will still allow the person with ops to kick or ban abusive users, change the topic of a channel, and confer operator status/voice status on another user.
To put someone on the auto-op list for your channel (which means ChanServ will give them (@)ops every time they join), the command is /cs AOP #channelname ADD nick. click on irc services for more info on chanserv.
To put someone on the auto-voice list for your channel (which means ChanServ will give them (+)voice every time they join), the command is /msg ChanServ addvoice #channelname nicknameORhostmask.
We do have (%)half-ops on this network.
Q. Where do I go if I need help while I`m connected to ?
A. If you need -related assistance while you`re connected to our network, please join the channel #help to ask for the help you need. Asking your question or stating why you need help clearly is preferable to asking whether we are around. We will be able to respond more quickly to your concerns/needs if we know why you are looking for assistance. We will be able to help you with matters concerning your connection to the network, issues with channel management, other users interfering with your time on or usage of the network.
Please be considerate and respectful while in #help. This IS the main support channel for our network and as such, we have many users of varying ages in the channel. Do not spam/repeat your request repeatedly. Do not use foul language. Often, the question you have may be answerable by other users in the channel with you.
If you have a game-specific question, instead of asking in #help, consider asking your question in a channel directly related to the game you`re asking about. For example, #counterstrike would be a better place to ask CS questions, just like #ut would be better to ask about Unreal Tournament questions.
If you have other questions not directly related to , like computer troubleshooting questions or scripting issues, you may want to ask those in a channel like #helpdesk.
Q. I see some people with xxx.clan.goldendogdev.net masks. What are they? How do I get one?
A. Those are called vhosts, which are "virtual hosts" created by for clans and legitimate organizations to hide real IPs/hostmasks for security purposes. See this page for more information about VHosts. In order to get one, please ask an admin/op in #help. You must be the primary channel admin of your public #channel, and you must be requesting one for a clan or other legitimate organization.
Q. I can`t connect to the network What do I do?
A. If you are unable to connect to and you see a message that looks like this: (Insecure Connection (Type Insecure HTTP Bounce - Port 80) - for help to get your security fixed email zach@goldendogdev.net
Q. What if I`m banned? How do I get in contact with you guys to fix it?
A. You may see a user join a channel and immediately quit with the message: Killed (Services.goldendgdev.net ([Ref#:number Expires:date] ban reason)). This means that user matched a G-Line and was denied access to the network. A G-Line is a global ban (ie. for all servers on our network) . If that ever happens to you, you will need to pick one of two options to get in contact with us. On a G-Line msg will have a Reference Number (Ref#), an expiration date, and a ban reason which will be a short description of the reason for the ban. You can email the message to zach@goldendogdev.net with an explanation why you think it happened, if you know, and your explanation as to why the G-Line should be removed to allow you access to our network again. Do not attempt to gain access to the network to ask why you have been G-Lined. Doing so is a violation of our rules and policies and may get the G-Line extended for a longer duration.
I get disconnected from sometimes. How do I fix that?
"[1[053] Software caused connection abort" errors are not the fault of our network. It`s usually attributable to a Winsock error or other routing error on your end.
